Rough Smoky Quartz Crystal
Known for its large crystals which can often be transparent, smoky quartz occurs in several countries around the world. Although a relatively hard mineral it's brittle so must be handled carefully.
The colour of smoky quartz is caused primarily by natural radiation. When being used for ornamental purposes it should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent the colour from fading.
This deep-brown coloured smoky quartz crystal once had a slightly smaller "companion crystal" growing in the opposite direction. The upper section of the additional crystal is likely to have broken away a very long time ago.
In our third photo you can see a smaller smoky quartz crystal that's fused into the main crystal.
This piece mainly exhibits a vitreous lustre which means it reflects light instead of absorbing it. The top of the broken crystal is exceptionally lustrous.
This smoky quartz crystal is rough and unpolished.
