Green Calcite Rough Stones
Striking green calcite rough stone from Mexico.
Calcite is a common mineral found in most geological environments.
Soft and fragile, it can be transparent to opaque. In its purest form, calcite is white or colourless, but impurities in its crystal structure cause a wide variety of colours.
The green hue in this variety usually comes from copper. It can also come from impurities of iron, but this is relatively rare.
The specific shade of green can vary depending on the concentration of the impurity.
Calcite is allochromatic, which means its colour is always caused by something outside of its natural chemical elements.
Calcite mostly occurs in sedimentary rocks such as limestone.
These green calcite stones have been coated with a fine, colourless resin which offers some protection against flaking and crumbling.
The size range is mainly medium to large, but because rough stone is not cut to a specific size, no two pieces are the same.
