Azurite Polished Stone
A small but chunky azurite cabochon-style stone.
This is the only piece of azurite that we currently have in our collection.
The upper section of this stone has been polished to a vitreous lustre, the base, which is flat, has only been lightly polished.
Azurite is a relatively rare mineral often found in copper ore deposits close to malachite. The two minerals frequently occur together.
Because of its distinctive blue colour, azurite has long been used as a pigment in paint and dyes. Over time and under the right conditions, azurite can weather and transform into malachite. The transition takes place due to the absorption of carbon dioxide and water from the air or from groundwater.
The fine line visible on the left of the stone is part of the mineral's natural markings.
