Translucent Polished Onyx Stone
A beautifully polished onyx stone with subtle hues of green and yellow. With it being highly translucent the precise shade of colour varies slightly depending on the angle and strength of light.
This onyx stone exhibits a vitreous lustre so the surface interacts with light in a similar way to glass. It has a glass-like appearance and texture which makes it incredibly tactile.
The back of the stone has a natural crevice with some interesting inclusions. Likely to be another mineral, this material would have become trapped during the early part of the stone's formation.
Although this stone is sold as onyx it's likely to be banded calcite. The vast majority of onyx being sold commercially is calcite that's been artificially coloured.
The reason for this is because calcite is more readily available than onyx and being much softer makes it easier to work with.
