Curious Gemstone Mounted in Sterling Silver
Despite using this stone in our collection for the best part of ten years, we are no closer to knowing for certain exactly what it is. It's often referred to as mariam fossil, elephant-skin jasper or calligraphy stone but these are tradenames created by retailers or stone cutters.
Although limited information is available online, we can find no factual geological data to back it up. Many claim it's a type of jasper but this name is often used incorrectly especially in tradenames. It's popular because jasper is a material many people are familiar with.
Having asked about it in various mineralogy and geology forums we have never received a definitive answer.
This stone has a curious natural cavity on the left side.
The reason for this pendant being reduced is because there is some minor surface damage on the back of the stone which can be seen in our third photo. Should you not be totally satisfied with your purchase it may be returned for a full refund (T&C's apply).
