Dalmatian Jasper Tumbles (Mexico)
Dalmatian Jasper tumbled stones in medium and larger sizes.
Dalmatian Jasper is mined in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
Due to its spotted appearance, it was named after the breed of dog.
As if a stone mined in Chihuahua called Dalmatian Jasper is not strange enough, it's not even a Jasper!
Rocks and minerals are often given trade names for marketing purposes, and in many cases, little consideration is given to its chemical composition.
The name "Jasper" is often used because the material is popular and well-known.
Dalmatian Jasper, which is an alkali feldspar granite, is correctly known as Perthite, named after the city of Perth (Ontario) which is close to where it was discovered.
The distinctive spots are inclusions of the relatively rare mineral arfvedsonite, named after the Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson.
The spots are often incorrectly reported to be tourmaline.
These grade-A Dalmatian Jasper tumbled stones have been beautifully polished. Although classed as large, some are closer to medium. We have therefore split them into medium and large.
