Iolite Crystals from India
Iolite is the gem variety of the mineral cordierite. Although classified and named in 1813, this mineral is believed to have been known and used in Sri Lanka long before then.
One of the most notable characteristics of iolite is its exceptional pleochroism. This characteristic enables a crystal to exhibit different colours when viewed from different angles.
Iolite grades 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, but despite its hardness, it can break quite easily.
Although labelled as tumbled stones, these crystals have been cut and polished by hand as opposed to being produced in a rock tumbler. Some do have minor anomalies which is not unusual when a mineral as hard as iolite is worked by hand.
Although colour can vary, iolite is best known for its blue to bluish-violet colour. The name comes from the Greek "ios" meaning violet.
Our iolite tumbled stones are ideal for display purposes or can also be used for their healing properties. They're a size medium but size can vary from piece to piece.
