Although the colour of carnelian can vary, stones mostly occur in shades of orange to orange-brown. Carnelian with a deep shade of orange, which can sometimes look almost black, are correctly known as sard.
When used for its metaphysical healing properties, carnelian is a stone of power. It can be used to protect against negative energies encountered in everyday life.
The late Judy Hall, author of the Crystal Bible, recommended carnelian to clear the sacral chakra. Also known as 'svadhisthana' in Hindu Tantrism, this chakra is the energy field for emotions, deep feelings and stimulating pleasure.
The sacral chakra is responsible for creativity, unleashing desire and boosting confidence.
In ancient times, crystals were used as 'prescriptions' for improving health. According to some records, carnelian, bloodstone and green aventurine are the three earliest stones used for this purpose.
Carnelian was recommended for cleansing and restoring liver and kidney function. Today, in crystal healing, many practitioners still recommend these same three stones.
