Mahogany Obsidian Natural Volcanic Glass
The colour of mahogany obsidian comes from iron oxides, usually hematite or limonite. One of the most common iron oxides is rust.
Obsidian is molten magma that cooled too rapidly for crystals to grow. Where crystals are present, they're microscopic. Being largely void of crystals means obsidian is not a mineral but a mineraloid.
Some geologists describe obsidian as a congealed material with minor amounts of microscopic crystals and other rock impurities.
Like other types of glass, it breaks with a conchoidal fracture because it lacks a crystalline structure. The presence of crystals would cause the edges to be more jagged.
Mahogany obsidian is also known as red obsidian.
Obsidian is relatively soft and breaks easily. Tumbled stones tend to be smooth and tactile, but while being produced, they often incur minor chips.
Our mahogany obsidian crystals are size medium. Size can vary from piece to piece.
