The mineral onyx has been widely used for decorative purposes for thousands of years. In recent years the name is often used incorrectly.
Onyx is a black and white or single coloured banded stone that's a variety agate. The main difference between the two is the shape of the bands. In onyx they're parallel whereas in agate they're curved.
The vast majority of onyx that's used for cutting and polishing is banded calcite. This material is used because it's softer which makes it much easier to work with. It's also more readily available than onxy.
