Amethyst is one of the most popular varieties of the mineral quartz.
Some of the world's largest amethyst geodes come from Brazil. Approximately 160 million years ago movement in tectonic plates and other geological occurrences in this region created large beds of quartz. Following exposure to radiation the crystals turned purple.
If exposed to daylight the colour of amethyst will fade albeit very slowly.
