Translucent Green Fluorite Stone
Highly translucent green fluorite polished stone from our collection of rocks and minerals. A wonderfully tactile cushion shaped piece with soft rounded edges.
This green fluorite was cut from material mined in Riemvasmaak in the Northern Cape of South Africa. It has only been lightly polished but has a vitreous lustre. Stones with this type of lustre reflect light in a similar way to glass.
Fluorite is often referred to as the world's most colourful mineral. That's because it occurs in such a wide variety of colours. In its purest form fluorite is colourless.
Although hues of yellow, green, blue and purple are the most common, stones can also be white, blue, red or brown. They're mostly transparent or translucent. It's not known for certain what causes the colour in green fluorite.
Fluorite is soft and fragile so stones must be handled with care. It's not unusual for them to have minor imperfections.
The colour of fluorite is sensitive to light. If exposed to sunlight for long periods of time it will fade.
The reddish-brown marking that's more prominent in our third photo is an inclusion. It becomes more visible when the stone is held up towards the light.
