Colourful Jasper Cabochons, Five Varieties
Six, grade A, finely polished Jasper stones cut as cabochons.
Cabochon 1 is Noreena Jasper. 2 is Scenic Jasper, which like Picture Jasper, is a type of mudstone.
Number 3 is Mookaite, and 4 is Ocean Jasper. Number 5 is Dalmatian Jasper, and 6 is Mookaite.
Dalmation Jasper is a trade name for Perthite, named after the city of Perth (Ontario), which is close to where the stone was discovered. It's an alkali feldspar granite that contains no Jasper at all.
Stones are often given trade names to boost their popularity. From a geological perspective, the problem with trade names is that many are misleading or inaccurate regarding the material's chemical composition.
Each Jasper cabochon has been fully polished and exhibits a vitreous lustre.
