Despite being a relatively hard mineral, topaz is very fragile. The main difficulty is that it breaks easily along planes of weakness in its crystal structure, a process known in geology as cleavage.
Although blue topaz occurs naturally, it's extremely rare. Therefore, most blue topaz is produced by heating white or colourless topaz.
