Garnet is one of the oldest gemstones and one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. Its use can be traced back as far as 3100 B.C.
Although red is one of the best-known and most popular colours, garnet can also be green, pink, yellow, orange, brown, black, or even colourless.
The colour is almost always natural because, unlike many minerals, it's rarely heat-treated.
Garnet is a hard, durable crystalline solid that's widely used as an abrasive. It can withstand high temperatures and extreme pressure.
A harder material is normally used when polishing garnet, and that tends to be quartz. With that said, the hardness of garnet and quartz is very similar.
These highly polished fine-grade garnet crystals are classed as a medium-sized tumbled stone, however, some are on the larger side of medium. Size does vary slightly from piece to piece.
