Some of the world's largest amethyst geodes come from Brazil. Approximately 160 million years ago, movement in tectonic plates and other geological occurrences in this region created large beds of quartz. Following exposure to radiation, the crystals turned purple.
When exposed to UV light, the colour of amethyst will gradually fade.
The crystal's rich purple colour comes from trace impurities of iron.
